Horsetail  is a perennial fern that belongs to the genus Equisetaceae. Perennial means a plant returns every year and usually lives at least two years.

The plant contains numerous beneficial compounds that give it multiple health-promoting effects. Of these, antioxidants and silica stand out. Certain chemicals in horsetail are thought to lower inflammation. They might also help the body make more substances that boost the immune system (antioxidants).

Antioxidants are molecules that protect your body from the effects of free radicals that can cause cell damage. Silica is a compound made up of silicon and oxygen and is believed to be responsible for horsetail’s potential benefits for skin, nails, hair, and bones

Promotes Bone Formation.
Osteoporosis is a condition that causes softening or thinning of the bone tissue, which can weaken the bones and cause them to break easily. It may occur in people going through menopause due to decreased estrogen  levels. Horsetail has been suggested as a treatment for osteoporosis (thinning bone), because it contains silicon, a mineral needed for bone health.

Acts as a natural diuretic.
Diuretics are substances that increase your body’s excretion of urine. Horsetail possess diuretic effects due to its high amounts of flavonoids, like quercetin e apigenin, phenolic compounds and mineral salts, all which help to increase the production and elimination of fluid through the urine. This treats swelling and fluid retention. A 2021 review of research found that horsetail may have potential as a therapy for kidney conditions, including urethritis and kidney stones.

Promotes wound healing and nail health.
The topical application of horsetail ointment appears to promote wound healing. Horsetail extract may be used in nail polish for the management of nail psoriasis, a skin condition that causes nail deformities. However, research on the direct effect of horsetail on wound healing and nail health is needed to verify these benefits.

Promotes hair growth.
Research suggests that horsetail may also benefit your hair, likely thanks to its silicon and antioxidant content. First, antioxidants help reduce micro-inflammation and the aging of hair fibers caused by free radicals. Second, a higher silicon content in hair fibers results in a lower rate of hair loss, as well as increased brightness.

You can use horsetail in many forms — including dried herb, tea, capsule, tincture

Herbal infusion (tea): 2 to 3 tsp., 3 times daily. Pour hot water onto herb and steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Drink as directed.

Speak with your doctor before using this herb if you are taking medication or have any ongoing health concerns, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have diabetes or have low potassium levels.  Horsetail may lower blood sugar and potassium levels.
