St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a flowering plant named for its bright yellow flowers that were said to bloom for the first time around St. John the Baptist's birthday. The word "wort" means "plant" in Old English.
The plant and its active constituents such as hyperforin and hypericin have a wide range of medicinal uses.
St. John's wort is widely believed to boost mood and provide some relief from depression. Because of its positive effects on mood, St. John’s wort has been used to alleviate and naturally remedy PMS symptoms, chronic fatigue and hormonal imbalance.
St. John’s wort has antibacterial properties and may also help fight inflammation that’s at the root of most diseases. The plant has exerted not only antibacteria but also anti-fungal and anti-yeast activities.
St. John’s wort is also rich in tannin, and it was used medicinally by indigenous peoples and Europeans for treating many ailments, including diarrhea, tuberculosis, bladder problems and worms.
